Medigap Plan B is one of the standardized Medicare Supplement Insurance plans designed to help fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage. While coverage may vary slightly depending on the insurance company, Medigap Plan B typically includes the following benefits:
Medicare Part A Hospital Costs: Coverage for coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles associated with hospital stays under Medicare Part A.
Medicare Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayments: Payment of coinsurance or copayments for hospice care received under Medicare Part A.
Medicare Part B Coinsurance or Copayments: Payment of the 20% coinsurance or copayments required under Medicare Part B for doctor visits, outpatient services, durable medical equipment, and preventive services.
First Three Pints of Blood: Coverage for the first three pints of blood needed for a medical procedure, as Original Medicare typically only covers additional blood beyond this amount.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care Coinsurance: Coverage for coinsurance for care received in a skilled nursing facility following a hospital stay, up to the plan limits.
Foreign Travel Emergency: Coverage for emergency medical care received while traveling abroad, up to plan limits.
Medigap Plan B provides comprehensive coverage, including Medicare Part A coinsurance, Part B coinsurance or copayments, first three pints of blood, Part A hospice care coinsurance, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, and foreign travel emergency care.
Medigap Plan B does not cover Medicare Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, or prescription drugs.
The cost of Medigap Plan B varies depending on factors such as the beneficiary’s age, location, and the insurance company offering the plan. Premiums for Medigap plans are typically based on the age of the beneficiary when they first enroll in the plan, with younger beneficiaries generally paying lower premiums. Additionally, premiums may increase over time due to factors such as inflation and changes in healthcare costs.
To get an accurate estimate of the cost of Medigap Plan B, beneficiaries should contact insurance companies that offer the plan in their area and request quotes based on their individual circumstances. It’s essential to compare premiums, coverage, and customer service reputation when selecting a Medigap plan to ensure the best value for your healthcare needs. You can enroll in any Medigap plan as soon as your Original Medicare Part B coverage begins. Once you meet this requirement, you have a six-month period known as the “guaranteed issue” period, during which you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan without being subject to medical underwriting.
However, you are not limited to this period. Outside of the open enrollment period, you can enroll at any time. In these cases, you may be required to answer some basic health questions as part of the application process
